A converter or frequency converter is an electronic device that converts alternating current (AC) of one frequency to alternating current of another frequency, in order to control motor speed. When combined with extra circuitry or electronic components, the converter is sometimes used as a power supply.
By definition, the word ‘converter’ includes drives, variable speed frequency converters, adjustable frequency converters, variable speed inverters, variable speed drives, frequency converters, inverters and power converters.
