Autumn reaches the factory too: are your electronics ready?
Humidity, condensation and temperature swings can put industrial electronic components to the test. The change of season is an opportunity to check their condition and take care of production continuity.
In autumn we take out our umbrellas, change our wardrobe and check the heating. Electronic boards, on the other hand, can’t put on a raincoat. Yet they too have to cope with a changing environment.
In production plants, the shift to the cooler season can accentuate certain critical conditions: humidity, temperature differences and condensation. When dust and contaminants are added to these factors, industrial electronics can suffer.
Of course, it’s not a leaf on the calendar that causes a failure. It’s the conditions in which components operate that make the difference.
Humidity and condensation: unwelcome guests
Boards, drives, power supplies and control systems often run for many hours, in environments where dust and machining residues build up.
Humidity can promote corrosion. Condensation, when it forms on electronic surfaces, can compromise electrical insulation and cause malfunctions. Some deposits can also retain moisture or hinder proper heat dissipation.
The result is not always a sudden failure. Sometimes intermittent anomalies, errors or irregular behaviour appear: signals that deserve attention, even when the machine keeps working.
A check before the unexpected happens
The change of season can be a useful reminder to check, with qualified personnel, the condition of electrical cabinets and installed components.
Aspects to check include:
-
any infiltration, traces of condensation or oxidation;
-
build-up of dust and contaminants;
-
condition of filters, seals and ventilation systems;
-
error messages and recurring anomalies.
Work should be planned according to the manufacturer’s instructions and the plant’s safety procedures. The most effective maintenance starts from observing actual conditions, because different environments and applications require different care.
Cleaning electronics is a technical job
When it comes to industrial electronic components, cleaning doesn’t simply mean removing visible dirt.
The type of contamination, the characteristics of the component and the appropriate treatment must be assessed. An unsuitable intervention can damage delicate materials or leave residues and moisture.
Technical cleaning must therefore be carried out with methods compatible with electronics, including proper drying and the necessary checks. If corrosion or damage is already present, cleaning alone may not be enough: a technical assessment is needed to identify the right intervention.
How E‑Repair can help
E‑Repair supports companies in caring for their industrial electronics through technical cleaning, testing and component-level repair services.
Starting from the condition of the device and the anomalies found, we assess the work needed to tackle the problem and verify proper operation.
Taking care of components also means protecting their value and contributing to production continuity. The change of season is a good opportunity to do so, especially when there are already signals worth investigating.
Leaves may fall. Production had better not.
